Train Line Skopje - Solun No More?
Saturday, 25 December 2010

Skopje and will no longer be connected Solun after New Year. This was announced last night by Greece's Railway System, however the announcement was removed this morning from their website. GR railway officials were not available for comment. The Macedonian Railway representatives say they have not heard of such decision from the southern neighbor.

As per the announcement, Greek Railways will disconnect the "Belgrad - Skopje - Solun" line in order to decrease its debt. After January 2011, the plan was to reduce the number of lines and increase ticket prices 50 to 75%.

If the decision to interrupt the Skopje - Solun train line is definitive, Athens will face some serious sanctions for unilaterally preventing an international railway transit.

The Skopje - Solun rail line was part of the first Macedonian railway line, started when the southern city was part of Macedonia. It is therefore the oldest rail line in Southern Europe, dating back to 1873rd

Although the original line had started as Skopje - Solun, a year later expanded to Mitrovica and then to Belgrade. Today, the transit line services Vienna - Belgrade - Skopje - Solun.
